India

The Country

There is no place on earth quite like India.  The smells, sights, and sounds invade your senses until they can take no more.

Every region of India has its own unique foods, climate, and even culture.  In the northeast you can find remote villages, with almost no outside influence.  In the big cities, you find five star hotels and American restaurant chains amongst people living in abject poverty.

Nothing is predictable, except  the unexpected.  Once you have been to India, you will never be the same.  You may love it, you may hate it, but it will change you.

The Religion

Like the other aspects of this country, India has a wide array of practiced religions.  India’s major religion, Hinduism, is practiced by 80% of the population, making it the largest religion in Asia. The effects of Hinduism are evident in every facet of Indian life, especially visible in the caste system.  It has been said to be Indian is to be Hindu.

Islam has over 100 million believers or 12.5% of the population, making it one of the largest Muslim nations on earth.  Christians make up 2.5% of the population.  Sikhism, which is a melding of Hindu and Islam, is followed by 2% of the population.  Other religions include Jainism, Buddhism, Parsee, and traditional beliefs.

India’s constitution provides for full religious freedom or worship and witness for all religions.  However, recent extremism has resulted in hate campaigns against both Muslims and Christians during the 1990s deeming these people followers of ‘foreign’ religions.  There have been demands for anti-conversion legislation and legal restrictions on Christian activities. Some Indian states have enacted such legislation.

What can I do?
There are many opportunities to minister in India. We will have the opportunity for mercy ministry serving in schools, churches, homes for the destitute, and on the streets. There will also be times to explore Indian culture and learn more about Hinduism by visiting Hindu temples. We will work with long term workers who will host our teams and provide the right ministry opportunities for us.

Where will we go?
We will spend time in Calcutta, one of the major cities in India with a population of 17 million. We also have the chance to travel to Assam in the north east part of India to visit remote villages and work with a local pastor.
