Japan

The Country

Japan is known as the 'Land of the Rising Sun' and is made up of over 3,000 islands. The Japanese people are thought to have migrated from China, Korea, and possibly Polynesia. There have been major cultural and religious influences upon Japan from China throughout history. This is seen in the influence of Buddhism throughout Japanese life, which came from China in the 6th century AD. Buddhism and Shinto are the major religions in Japan and have managed to co-exist in relative peace.

Most Japanese are not overtly religious although almost all visit shrines at least once a year. Most people also mix Shinto and Buddhist ceremonies during their lifetime, not strictly following one faith.

The Imperial Family is also a central part of Japanese life. The Emperor is traditionally thought to have ancestory with the sun goddess Amaterasu and is the head of state. Real power lies with the Prime Minister (who is elected) and with the written Constitution.

Japan today is a leading industrial nation, specializing in technology, robotics, computers, cars, and electronics. It has recently emerged from a 15 year recession to achieve healthy economic growth and a new found confidence.

We desire to support the long-term work of the church in Japan and see it grow in numbers and influence.
