Morocco

The Country

Morocco, often called the window to the Muslim world, lies on the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea.  This kingdom evokes images of magic carpets, colorful spices, and mythical stories.   Spectacularly diverse, the country of Morocco has something for everyone - endless coastline to the snow-capped Atlas Mountains to the Sahara desert. The people are incredibly friendly and tourists are very welcome here.

The Religion

Morocco is 99% Muslim.  Virtually none of the non-Muslim population is native Moroccan. Islam was founded in the seventh century when Mohammed received a revelation that resulted in the Koran.  Muslims believe that Jesus was a prophet, but not the son of God.  There are five pillars of Islam that must be followed – declaration of faith, daily prayers, giving of charity, fasting, and pilgrimage.  It is believed that if your good deeds outweigh your bad deeds, then you will enter Paradise.

What can I do?
Morocco is very open to Westerners and, as a Westerner, it is assumed that you are a Christian.  While it is not legal to openly preach on the street, it is legal to be a Christian.  The best thing you can do, is simply to openly be a Christian and show both your love for God and God’s love for you through your actions.

Practical ways to effect a change:

  • Communion - Communion is the central act of Christian worship, celebrating God's most dramatic act of love for us.  By sharing communion in Morocco we are actively proclaiming the truth of Christianity wherever we go.

·  Worship – Moroccans love music and will often listen to you if you start singing.  We can invite God’s presence anywhere we go in this country, simply by worshipping Him.

·  Friendship evangelism – Moroccans are incredibly friendly and will often invite you over for tea or dinner.  It is also possible to live in a Berber village for a few days with a Muslim family.  These are awesome opportunities to ask about their beliefs and share yours in return.

  • Intercession – Prayer makes a difference.  We go to key places and pray for God’s will to be done and His truth to be revealed.

Where will we go?
We go to the key cities of Morocco.  These include Rabat - the political capital, Marrakech - the cultural capital and Fez - the religious capital.  In each of these cities we will have the chance to effect a change in all of the ways listed above.  We also have the chance to stay with a family in a Berber village. The village is located about 2 hours outside of Marrakech in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains.  While there, you have the chance to learn what indigenous village life is like.  We will live with this family for two days helping with the daily chores, learning about their culture, and developing relationships with them.
