South Africa

The Country

South Africa is a country of stunning natural beauty. From the safari parks to the beaches there is so much explore and discover.

The people of South Africa also offer a rich diversity. African, Dutch and British influence is obvious throughout the country. One example of this diversity are the 11 official languages.

Years of Apartheid (the legal racial separation of blacks and whites) ended in 1994 when the first democratic elections were held. Nelson Mandela became President until 1999 when Thabo Mbeki replaced him. The violent upheaval which many predicted never materialized and now South Africa is moving forward, trying to create equal opportunities for everyone.

The Religion

There has never been an official state religion in South Africa, yet almost all South Africans have some religious affiliation.

Christianity arrived with European settlers in the 1600s and remains the largest religion (68% of the population). Indigenous religions make up 28%, with Islam and Hinduism around 2% each.

The 2 main Christian denominations are the African Independent churches and the Dutch Reformed Church. Roman Catholics, Anglicans, and Methodists are also well represented.

Unfortunately the church was not always clear in it's opposition against Apartheid, especially the Dutch Reformed Church. Some churches and church leaders did stand up to Apartheid including Anglican archbishop Desmond Tutu (pictured right).

Where will we go?
We will visit the city of Durban and the surrounding area. Durban is a major city in South Africa and home to a very large Indian population. We will also visit areas outside of Durban in order to experience South African life away from the big city and with different people groups.
