Thailand

The Country

Originally known as Siam, the Kingdom of Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been colonized by a European power.  Consequently, this country is full of diversity and strong cultural heritage.  Thai culture remains dominant even in modern cities with the driving force being the belief in Theravada Buddhism.  The Thais are a hospitable, fun-loving, and easy-going people which may be why Thailand currently draws more visitors than any other country in this region.

The Religion

More than 95% of Thais practice and profess Theravada Buddhism which is evident in their everyday life.  Buddhism was established as the dominant religion in the thirteenth century by the reigning king and has continued to receive strong support from the monarchs. Buddhism has subsequently trickled down to the common people.  Because it emphasizes tolerance and individual initiative, which correlates with the Thais' sense of freedom, Buddhism has gained wide acceptance.  Although Buddhism is the primary religion, Thais have religious freedom.  Other religious practices include Islam (4%), Christianity (0.5%), Taoism, Hinduism, and Confucianism.

What can I do?
The opportuinities in Thailand are overwhelming for two reasons.  First, because Thailand has religious freedom, you can safely share the Gospel throughout the country.  Secondly, since 95% of the population is Buddhist, the potential harvest is enormous.  If you have a desire to minister to university students, orphans (young and old), prostitutes, the poor and needy, Hilltribe people, Buddhists, Muslims, or unreached people groups, then Thailand is the place for you!  Church planting projects are also underway and could use your help.

Where will we go?
Where we go depends on the type of ministry you want to do.  In Pattaya, a city south of Bangkok, you can be involved with a prostitution recovery ministry.  To minister to university students, we would go to Bangkok which has the largest university system in the world with over 300,000 students enrolled.  In northern Thailand, we could work with an orphanage, work alongside different local Thai pastors, volunteer at a leper colony, or trek into the hill tribes.

When can I go?

We would love to organize a trip for your church, small group, etc.  We look for a minimum of 10 team members and we will take care of the rest.  Please contact us if you have further questions.
